QA: Is GAMBLING a sin?

QA: Is GAMBLING a sin?

Hey everyone, Good to have you reading with us on this fine day.  We’re taking the time to answer more questions that are out there so please don’t hesitate to ask at connect@swordsharp.com. SURE, YOU’VE HEARD a Christian in a debate respond to the question “YOU WANNA BET?” with something like, “I WOULD… but I don’t gamble.”  Another well-intentioned Christian may be invited to a casino but deny the request saying, “No, no, I’m a Christian.  I don’t do that.”  This, naturally, leads the requester to internally ask, “am I sinning when I make a bet?” So, let’s ask the question directly so we can answer it in an unbiased way: Is GAMBLING a SIN? There is a big group that will say, “yes” but if asked to provide scriptural references for their stance many may struggle to find one that definitively counts all forms of betting or gambling as a sin.  While many have learned from “tradition” that betting and gambling are sins, the Bible does not directly outlaw them. There are those believers that say, “no, it is not a sin to bet or gamble.”  Based on our research we can say without bias that their position is actually the correct one.  But it is not a good enough reason to say, “the Bible does not mention it, so it is not a sin!”  The Bible does not mention cocaine or Russian roulette either but that doesn’t make them ok with God!  Let’s examine 1 Corinthians 10:23: “All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify.” Assuming it is lawful...
Politics, Emotion, and Division in the USA – Christian Gamer’s Perspective

Politics, Emotion, and Division in the USA – Christian Gamer’s Perspective

This sound familiar? “ALL (the political party you hate here) are SO BLINDED!  They CANNOT SEE PAST their own agenda.  They ONLY CARE ABOUT (some trivialized list of concerns). They’re SO EMOTIONAL!” The funny thing is whether it’s a Democrat, Republican, or some other political party the loudest voices sound the same. Sure, liberals and conservatives have legitimate differences.  But there is one thing gamers usually get that others don’t always in the political world… unity toward common goals. I know you all remember what Jesus said (especially you minority church going liberals and you evangelical Christian conservatives 😉 ) … a house divided against itself cannot stand.  So, how can the US, or any other nation for that matter, stay standing as long as we find reasons to be at each others’ throats? What do gamers do?  Even when there is a troll on team;  even when a team member is super weak in their role;  even when your support builds like a mage or your tank equips heavy damage weapons (UGHHH!!!!!) we still do our best mobilize toward victory. Yes, there are the KSing selfish players out there that you need to block.  But I think most others are fairly genuine, even if we think they might be misguided.  But at the end of the day, no one is above being misguided.  We all have been at some point, I suppose.  And it is that humility of knowing “I was misguided before, and may possibly be now or in the future in some way” that will hopefully help us RESPECTFULLY disagree… with humility and without belittling someone of a different...
“REVIVAL” – Gamer’s Perspective on Church Revival

“REVIVAL” – Gamer’s Perspective on Church Revival

When GAMERS here the word REVIVAL they likely think of a downed avatar coming back to life without having to wait a for a cooldown or respawn at some distant checkpoint.  However, when the Church says REVIVAL they refer to a mass spiritual awakening of people coming to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.  Some would suggest the term also includes the demonstration of signs, wonders, and miracles being seen all over by  large groups of people. REVIVAL is a buzz word these days in churches.  Lots of churches and organizations are praying for revival, but few are actually seeing it.  How can we see revival?  Let’s take a gamer at SwordSharp.com for example. One gamer named Winston, who happens to be on our team at SwordSharp.com, is also a street evangelist from California.  Winston spent years trying to help people know Jesus but the conversations tended to be short and unfruitful.  The only real in depth discussions he had seemed to turn into never ending philosophical debates with endless questions.  One day Winston met a friend that was also an evangelist (and a gamer) that experienced revival in his own life.  That friend shared some tips with Winston and discipled him.  When Winston left on his own he used those tips and said that he was able to lead more people to Jesus Christ in one week than his entire life prior! What are some tips we can give for YOU to see REVIVAL in your church and in your life?  Let’s discuss this is gamer relevant terms: 1) YOU CAN’T BE REVIVED IF YOU AREN’T PLAYING – When you pray for revival, are you praying for...
Binge Watching!!! Good or Bad for your Faith?

Binge Watching!!! Good or Bad for your Faith?

You know how it is when you see that AWESOME EPISODE of a series that just HOOKS YOU into watching the rest of the season online… over the next 12 HOURS! Some might be saying, “12 hours!?  … I spend my ENTIRE WEEKEND watching the whole series!”  And if it’s one of those awesome classic anime or tv series we haven’t finished we might just sacrifice 3-4 hours of sleep EVERY NIGHT to catch up! Well, if you are like many of us, when you’re all done investing long hours watching a series you feel a subtle, indescribable emptiness inside that sticks around, at least until the next binge watching session starts.  Why is that? There’s something that’s not quite fulfilled in us after those sessions.  Maybe because our senses are being stimulated, but not our spirits.  Could it be because watching hours of Hulu, Netflix, and CruchyRoll is a sin? Here’s the deal… The Bible says, “All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.” – 1 Corinthians 6:12 As a result, we know it is NOT A SIN to watch lots of online shows, but we also know it IS A SIN to be consumed by entertainment such that it has a MASTERY over us.  …including our favorite video games which we schedule our lives around. Well, if you are one of the many bound by a cycle of binge watching but you want to know how you can stop and get closer to God, it may not be easy, but here’s how: 1) Set limits and...
Be MERRY in a MAD Season

Be MERRY in a MAD Season

Glory glory to the newborn King, right!?! …or should I be worried about maxing out my credit cards on the season’s best sales to look stylish and immerse myself in the best entertainment to drown out my life’s problems?  No! This season is not about us.  When we make it so we risk becoming our own Grinches.   But the funny thing is when we look to Him He gives back to us.  Your Heavenly Father will provide ALL your needs if you seek His business first! (Matthew 6:33) But this doesn’t just include God’s gifts to you.  Whether it’s drama in your life or world problems like police brutality, natural disasters, information hacking, or war, the Lord will cover you!  If you’re a child of God YOU DEFEAT THE ENEMY because Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world! (1 John 4:4)  . Christmas is a time is when we unite to celebrate the birth of our Savior who came into the world with a Sword to give YOU victory!  God’s love for you was so great He sent His only Son so you can believe again as well as see true joy in this season and every other! There’s nothing wrong with getting gifts, good food, and family.  But know that the only true way to be Merry is through Jesus Christ, the reason for the season.  And know this: even if you don’t have the presents, snacks, and fellowship, if you’ve accepted Jesus Christ you’ll have everything you can ever need because He’s the source of our well being.  …and if you ask Him for anything...
FEAR – False Evidence Appearing Real

FEAR – False Evidence Appearing Real

I heard the word “FEAR” defined by a pastor friend I know as “False Evidence Appearing Real.”  If you think about it, there’s much truth to that. Isn’t that what horror is all about?  Who’s in the closet?  What’s under my bed?  Will I survive?  Will I ever find true love?  All topics people fear have to do with things that either have not yet happened and/or will never happen. Fear is a tool of the enemy.  God didn’t give it to you.  He gave you power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). How can you deal with fear?  The Love Sword is the answer.  “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear…” (1 John 4:18).  If you don’t want to deal with fear anymore you need to know God.  God is love (1 John 4:8). If there is something you fear, give it to God through prayer and intercession.  God will give you actionable steps to resolve the problem, and sometimes He will want you to trust Him to deal with it for you.  …and trust me, He’s BIG enough to handle it!  😉 Have questions on how to deal the death blow to fear in your own life?  Got prayer needs?  Follow us on Twitter @SwordSharpGames, Like us on Facebook, and email us at connect@swordsharp.com! Go forth and slay fear...
